We have only one meet, (The Potomac Hunt Races) left in the 2026 Maryland Governor’s Cup Series, but most of the horse titles have already been determinedL

  • Timber Horse of the Year: Mr. Fine Threads (Armata Stables)
  • Novice Timber Horse of the Year TIE: Tufton Ave (IRE) (Runnymore Racing LLC)  & Recoup (GB) (Irvin Naylor)
  • Amateur Apprentice Timber Horse & Rider of the Year TIE: For the Parish (IRE), Paddy Barlow up & De Nordener (IRE) Sophie O’Brien up
  • Maryland Heavyweight Timber Champion TIE: Bogey’s Image (H. Goolsby, A. O’Donovan, D. Colhoun & Road to Oz (Daniel Baker)
  • Irish Thoroughbred Horse of the Year: Tufton Aven (IRE), (Runnymore Racing LLC)

Where things get interesting in terms of Potomac and points, are in the rider (adult and young), trainer and owner awards.

Dan Nevin is leading Teddy Davis by only 5 points for Timber Rider of the Year; currently, each have one timber mount at Potomac. A first earns 6 points, while a second earns 3 points, third earns one point. Dan would have to not finish in the points and Teddy would have to finish first, and that could change the Timber Rider. OR one of them could pick up another ride (there are 2 timber races at Potomac). Stay tuned!

Leading Amateur Rider is a bit tighter: Nevin has 44 points, Davies 40 points, and Eric Poretz at 36.5. Of these three, the only one currently who has a ride in an amateur race at Potomac is Teddy Davies.

For the Voss Amateur FLAT Series, things get interesting, as Nevin, Davies, Conor Tierney, Paul Griffiths and Whitney Schweizer are all sitting in first position with 3 points each, with James Wyatt and Eric Poretz each with 1.5 points. Of these, at this time, only Davies and Wyatt have rides in Potomac’s ami flat. Winner will add 3 points. We hate ties, so would love to one of these guys break the tie! Flats get 3 points for finishing first, 1.5 for finishing second. This makes it statistically possible to still conclude this title with a tie – we just hope it is a 2 way tie and not a 5 way tie!

For the lady riders, Sophie O’Brien and multi-time winner Virginia Korrell are in first and fourth place (12.5 and 9 points respectively); but this too could change as O’Brien currently has one ride in Potomac and Korrell has two.

For Trainer of the Year, Leslie Young leads with 61.50, followed by Joe Davies with 57 and then Jack Fisher with 50. Well, as Davies has 7 entries and Fisher has 4, look for that to get changed up (riders cross entered in the same races notwithstanding, if they can find someone else to go in the irons.

As Armata has two entered at Potomac and Runnymore Racing has none, there is a good chance that Armata will, once again, capture Owner of the Year for Ben Griswold and the late Perry Bolton.
